Cardinal wrestlers defeat Ashe, 60-15

WEST JEFFERSON — East Wilkes won four of the first five weight classes to jump out to a quick lead, on the way to a 60-15 win over Ashe County on Friday night.

In the 106-pound class, Chimeco Barber got the Cardinals’ first win by pinning Caleb Cooper.

The next contested match was at 120 pounds where East Wilkes won again by pinfall with Jesse Aguilar topping Ashe’s Tate Miller.

126-pounder Alex Rotal won by forfeit to put the Cardinals up 18-0.

At 132 pounds, Adam Moore took down Ashe’s Brady Buchanan and got the pin.

The first win for the Huskies came in the 138-pound class where Harley Miller and Luis Aquino went the distance with Miller taking an 11-7 decision win.

The final two contested matches both went to the Huskies. 152-pounder John Reavis pinned Carlos Aguilar and 195-pounder Jake Shepherd earned a pinfall win over Joe Burchette.

Dakota Parks (145), Brandon Stamper (160), Johnathan Lopez (170), Colby Cooper (182), Jesus Martinez (220) and Malachi Combs (285) all won by forfeit for East Wilkes.

The Huskies currently have three Mountain Valley Athletic Conference matches left on the schedule. Ashe will travel to Wilkes Central this Friday and then host West Wilkes on Jan. 19 and Alleghany on Jan. 22.
