WINSTON-SALEM — Ashe County sent 14 athletes to the JDL Fast Track for the first indoor meet of 2016 last Friday. The meet was broken up into three mini-meets with one on Friday evening and two on Saturday. The Husky squad competed on Friday with over 30 other North Carolina high school teams.
The top performance of the day went to Sam Hudler who placed third in the men’s high jump, clearing six feet, two inches.
In men’s 55-meter hurdles, Nick Lanfranchi had a solid finish in fourth place overall, finishing in 9.06 seconds.
Terek Ashley and Riley Richardson both ran in the men’s 500-meter run. Ashley finished 19th overall in 1:17 and Richardson finished 26th in 1:20.
The men’s team had three other competitors make the trip. Nate Owens finished 27th in the 55-meter dash in 11.2 seconds. Carter Wilson and Tanner Kilby both competed in the men’s shot put. Wilson placed 11th with a throw of 31 feet, 5.5 inches and Kilby was 13th with a throw just over 26 feet.
The women had two runners in the 55-meter hurdles. Savannah Cary was 12th with a finishing time of 10.29 seconds and teammate Bella Potter was 17th with a time of 11.25 seconds.
Potter joined Katherine Horner and Brooklyn Roten competing in the women’s 55-meter dash. Horner was 24th (8.64 seconds) followed by Roten in 26th (8.73 seconds) and Potter in 27th (9.06 seconds).
The final two individual events the women competed in were the shot put and the long jump. Cary took 13th in the long jump with a leap of 12 feet, 11 inches. Katie Orr finished 13th overall in the shot put with a toss of 22 feet, five inches.
Ashe had a pair of relay teams make the trip as well. The group of Cary, Roten, Horner and Kaitlyn Jordan placed 10th in the women’s 4×200 relay, finishing the race in 2:06. On the men’s side, Hudler, Ashley, Richardson and Tafton Baker took eighth in the 4×800 relay, finishing in 9:37.
