WEST JEFFERSON — The Lady Huskies snapped a brief three-game losing skid and held the Rams to no more than seven points in any quarter, on the way to a 54-25 win on Wednesday night.

Ashe opened the game strong, outscoring the Rams 17-7 in the first quarter and built on to its lead to take a 29-14 halftime advantage. In the third, Starmount was held to just four points and the Lady Huskies put the game in cruise control with a 43-18 lead going to the fourth period.

Freshman Samantha Woods paced Ashe with 16 points. Chloe Sullivan added 11 and senior Savannah Brooks had her best scoring game of the year with nine points.

Maddie Warner scored six points off the bench, Amber Miller and Madison Osborne both chipped in five points, Jayce Miller scored three and Lyndsi Holman added a free throw.

For the Lady Rams, Tecora Manns was the high scorer with six points. Taylor Wood scored four, Claire Maske added three, as did teammates Darion Dobson and Elizabeth Pozo. Brayln Hampton and Courtney Byrd each scored two points and Courtney Snow hit a free throw.

Elkin 30, Ashe 27

A shorthanded Lady Husky team almost pulled off a huge win over Elkin, but a pair of late free throws and a turnover by Ashe sealed the win for Elkin.

Ashe played without senior starter Savannah Brooks and key reserves Lyndsi Holman and Jayce Miller, but still put up a great fight against the first place team in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

The Lady Elks improved to 20-1 and 11-1 in the MVAC while Ashe slipped to 11-11 overall and 4-8 in MVAC action.

Elkin looked like they were about to pull away in the second quarter, opening the frame with a 13-0 run to take a 20-7 lead. Ashe got a quick basket from Gracie Greene before the half to make the score 20-9.

However, Ashe battled back in the third quarter. Sydney Kate Grubb nailed a three-pointer, Chloe Sullivan added five points of her own and Amber Miller hit a basket to bring Ashe to within three points at 22-19. Grubb hit a free throw to get Ashe to within two points before Elkin closed the third with four points to take a 26-20 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Huskies got to within one point at 28-27, but with a chance to take the lead, a steal from Kylie Thomas kept Elkin in front. Thomas buried a pair of free throws to give the Lady Elks a three-point advantage at 30-27.

Ashe had a chance to tie it but could not get a shot off.

Thomas led the Elks with eight points. Miracle Walters scored six, Morgan Randleman had four and Samantha Cozart scored four.

C. Sullivan was the game’s high scorer with 14 points. Grubb scored four, Warner scored two, Olivia Patton had two, Miller scored two, Greene had two and Abby Sullivan added a free throw.
