WEST JEFFERSON — A 24-point outburst in the second quarter from the Lady Huskies helped Ashe end the regular season with a 58-27 win over West Wilkes on Senior Night.

Ashe’s lone senior, Savannah Brooks, scored six of her eight points in the first quarter, including the first basket of the game.

Freshman Samantha Woods poured in 19 points to lead all scorers with 10 of those coming in Ashe’s big second quarter spurt.

Chloe Sullivan added 13 points, Jayce Miller scored six, as did teammate Lyndsi Holman. Maddie Warner scored four and Gracie Greene scored two points in the fourth quarter to round out the totals.

For West Wilkes, it was a struggle for them to contend with a stingy Ashe County defense. Just three West Wilkes players scored points. Elizabeth Huffman was the high scorer with 15, Caitlyn Shepherd scored six and Emily Bumgarner added six.

The Lady Huskies finished the regular season at 12-12 overall and 5-9 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

West Wilkes limped home to a 5-18 overall record and 2-12 mark in conference play.

Up next for both teams will be the MVAC Tournament this week, weather permitting. Last season, the tournament was canceled due to snow and if weather forecasts remain true, Mother Nature may have something to about this year’s MVAC Tournament as well.

If the tournament is played, the Lady Huskies will be the fifth seed and will travel to fourth-seeded Wilkes Central in the first round, set for Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The semifinals and finals are scheduled to be played at Ashe County High School.

North Wilkes and Elkin shared the MVAC regular season title as both finished with a 12-2 record.

Final MVAC standings

1. North Wilkes: 22-2, 12-2

2. Elkin: 21-2, 12-2

3. East Wilkes: 14-8, 10-4
