Wilkes Central beats Ashe in first round

WILKESBORO — A strong second have surge by Wilkes Central made the difference in Wednesday’s first round Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Tournament game.

The Lady Huskies trailed by just three points at the half, 21-18. However, the Eagles had a big third and fourth quarter effort, outscoring Ashe by 13 points to get a 47-31 victory.

Kailey McNeil led the Eagles with 10 points in a balanced scoring effort for the team. Jade Duncan and Brooke Bentley each scored eight points. Jordan Ellis added seven, Taylor Mastin scored five, Madelyn Morrison added five and Heaven Walker scored four.

Ashe County freshman Samantha Woods led all players with 14 points. Abby Sullivan scored six points, Madison Warner had four, Gracie Greene scored three and Savannah Brooks added two points. Chloe Sullivan was held in check by the Eagle defense, scoring just one point. Madison Osborne rounded out Ashe’s scoring with a free throw.

The Lady Huskies sit at 12-13 overall while Wilkes Central improved to 18-7.
