LENOIR — Ashe County scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning to rally for a 5-4 victory over Hibriten on Wednesday night.

Trailing by a run heading to the final frame, the Huskies got things started with an infield hit from Joseph Lowder. Another hit from Turtle Windish moved Lowder to third as the tying run. Senior Kendall Richardson came through with a hit that scored Lowder and moved Windish into scoring position.

Gabe Elliott completed the rally with a hit of his own to score the game-winning run.

“I thought we played pretty good. I thought we just did a better job of pitching and a better job of hitting the ball than Hibriten,” said Ashe County head coach Mike Windish.

For the third straight game, the Huskies got another strong pitching performance.

“We went with Turtle and I thought he did an outstanding job. He went five solid innings for us and gave up two hits. He did the job we needed him to do,” said Coach Windish.

Lowder came into pitch the final two innings and got the win in relief.

“Overall, we did a pretty decent job against a bigger school on the road. Hibriten is one of the better hitting teams we’ve faced so far,” said Windish.

As a team, the Huskies got eight hits off of the Hibriten pitching staff. Richardson and Lowder both had two hits in four plate appearances. Richardson added a pair of RBI’s while Elliott and Lowder each drove in a run. Windish, Elliott, Garrett Miller and Ben Brown all added a hit in the victory.

For Hibriten, sophomore Garrett Jones had a hit and three RBIs.

Ashe improved to 3-0 on the young season while Hibriten dropped to 2-2.

The Huskies have a big week ahead with three road games on tap, including the first two games of the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference schedule.

The week begins on Monday at North Surry before heading to Starmount on Tuesday and Wilkes Central on Friday.

“I think our team is in a really good spot right now. We were able to show another good pitching arm,” said Windish. “That gives the team a lot of confidence and makes it a lot easier on the coaching staff as well. We still have a couple arms we haven’t shown yet.”
