Track teams win at Mitchell

BAKERSVILLE — The Ashe County track team traveled to the Mitchell County Invitational last week and came back with the overall high scores in both the men’s and women’s events.

The men tallied 193 points, holding off Mountain Heritage in second with 177.5 points. Mitchell was third followed by Avery County in fourth and Crossnore Academy in fifth.

On the women’s side, Ashe scored 167.5 points, beating Mountain Heritage’s total of 91 points. Mitchell was third, Avery was fourth and Crossnore Academy was fifth.

As a team, Ashe overpowered the competition, winning 17 events.

Kaitlyn Jordan won the women’s 200-meter dash with a finishing time of 29.94 seconds. In the 400-meter dash, the ladies took gold with Brooklyn Roten winning in 1:14.

In the 800-meter run, Olivia Randolph took the top spot in 3:06 and then finished third in the mile run in 6:56.

Bella Potter took first in the women’s high jump, clearing four feet, six inches. In the long jump, it was Savannah Cary that took the top spot with a leap of 14 feet, one inch.

In relay events, Ashe’s women placed first in the 4×100 and 4×400 while finishing runner-up in the 4×200.

On the men’s side, Andrew Tedder and Terek Ashley finished first and second in the 800-meter run. Tedder finished in 2:10, seven seconds ahead of his teammate.

In the mile run, Tafton Baker cruised to a first place finish in 5:32.

Ashe got wins in three relay events, taking the top spot in the 4×100, 4×400 and 4×800 events.

In the field, Ashe won all five events the team entered. Sam Hudler took first in the high jump, clearing five feet, eight inches. Wesley Waddell and Hunter Argetsinger were first and second in the long up with Waddell’s leap measuring 17 feet, three inches. Nick Lanfranchi won the triple jump with a leap of 33 feet, nine inches. Luis Ramos won gold in the discus with a throw of 130 feet, 11 inches and Alex Richardson earned a first place finish in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, eight inches.
