MILLERS CREEK — The Ashe County Huskies moved to 2-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference with a pair of victories to close out the week.

Ashe traveled to West Wilkes on Wednesday and came away with a 6-3 win over the Blackhawks.

“It was a good win for us. West Wilkes is a much improved team and the number one player, a freshman, will be a strong contender against any team this year,” said Ashe County head coach Larry Dix.

That freshman, top seed Landon Church, beat Ashe’s top seed, Jacob Key, by a 6-0, 6-0 score.

The Huskies got wins in the next three matches. Second seeded Andrew Shepherd easily handled Alex Duer in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. In the third seeded match, Simon Houck came away with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Owen Miller and fourth seeded Dakin Christoferson was a 6-0, 6-0 winner against Brandon Milam.

The teams split the final two singles matches. Blackhawk fifth seed William Walker was able to hang on for a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ashe’s Carter Wilson. In the sixth and final singles match, Ashe’s Devin Rupard got a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Graylan Walker.

In doubles matches, the West Wilkes duo of Church and Miller got an 8-3 win over key and Shepherd. The Huskies won both of the remaining doubles contests. Houck and Rupart were 8-2 winners over Duer and Milam while Wilson and Christoferson were 8-2 winners over William and Graylan Walker.

“We played very well in a very strong wind and a hot spring day,” said Dix. “I feel good about our progress but look forward to more consistency, which will come with more court time. Our young players need more experience playing matches against other teams.”

Ashe is still playing without its preseason top seed, Noah Gouge, who has been out of town competing in numerous trap shooting competitions.

On Thursday, the Huskies easily dispatched of Alleghany by a 9-0 score.

Ashe County now sits at 3-2 overall on the season.

Next up, the Huskies will be at Elkin on Tuesday and at Starmount on Thursday.
