WEST JEFFERSON — Ashe County remained unbeaten in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference, holding off a scrappy West Wilkes team for a 2-1 victory.
The Lady Huskies got on the scoreboard in the seventh minute with a nice shot from Caroline Current to take a 1-0 lead.
Ashe had a pair of corner kick opportunities in the 25th and 26th minutes and came close to extending the lead but was forced to settle for a 1-0 lead at the half.
In the second half, West Wilkes came out swinging with a corner kick in the 43rd minute that got a shot on goal to keep the Husky defense on its toes.
The Huskies had another corner kick chance in the 53rd minute but once again, the Blackhawk defense kept the ball away from the net.
In the 57th minute, Alyssa Peterson had a great scoring chance and got taken down inside the scoring box, resulting in a penalty kick. Bekah Bowers took the kick and fired it right over the keeper’s head for a 2-0 lead.
West Wilkes answered back three minutes later. Cassie Burdiss drew a foul in the scoring box, giving the Blackhawks a penalty kick. Amanda Limon blasted the kick low and away from Ashe’s keeper to cut the deficit to one goal at 2-1.
The final 20 minutes of play was all Huskies from an offensive standout. Ashe had three more corner kicks in the final 12 minutes and kept the Blackhawks from getting another shot on goal the rest of the way.
Ashe improved to 5-4 overall and 3-0 in the MVAC. West Wilkes dropped to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the MVAC.
Ashe will be on the road for a trio of games next week. The Huskies head to Surry Central for a non-conference match on Tuesday before trips to Elkin (Tuesday) and Starmount (Friday) getting back into MVAC action.
