Golfers play two matches at Oakwoods

WILKESBORO — All eight Mountain Valley Athletic Conference teams played a pair of nine-hole matches at Oakwoods Country Club last week.

Wilkes Central and Alleghany tied for the top spot in the first match with team scores of 155. Elkin was third with a team score of 171, followed by West Wilkes (183), Starmount (184), North Wilkes (185), East Wilkes (185) and Ashe County (205).

Andrew Johnson of West Wilkes and Chandler Metz of Wilkes Central each shot a 36 for the top individual rounds.

For Ashe, Corey Carter had the team’s best score with a 49. Kenan Kurtz shot 51, Kendall Wagner finished with a 52, Ben Brooks shot 53 and Jacob Schell shot 59.

In the second match, Wilkes Central cruised to a 17-shot victory over Alleghany with a score of 147. Elkin (172), West Wilkes (180), North Wilkes (181), Starmount (182), East Wilkes (188) and Ashe County (200) rounded out the scores for the second match.

Wilkes Central’s Zach Caudill had the best round with a 35, tied with Andrew Cheek of West Wilkes.

Wagner improved on his first nine holes by five shots, finishing with a 47 for Ashe’s best score. Carter equaled his first nine-hole performance with a 49, Brooks shot 51, Schell finished with a 53 and Kurtz shot 59.
