WEST JEFFERSON — Ashe County won two of its previous three matches, all coming in Mountain Valley Athletic Conference action.

The Huskies wrapped up last week with a pair of victories at home, first up against North Wilkes on Wednesday. Ashe swept all nine matches.

“It was a good match for our young men. This was one of the best matches they have played in,” said Ashe County head coach Larry Dix. “They kept the ball in play and made far less errors.”

Top seed Andrew Shepherd was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Chase Spicer. Second seeded Jacob Key easily handled Jorge Martinez by a 6-0, 6-1 score and third seeded Simon Houck grabbed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Joseph York.

In the final three singles matches, North Wilkes was able to win just two games in the three matches combined.

Dakin Christoferson beat Grant Lyons in the battle of fourth seeded players, 6-1, 6-0.

Fifth seeded Noah Gouge was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Anthony Cornia and six seeded Devin Rupard earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Weil Norman.

In doubles play, Shepherd and Key beat Spicer and York, 8-1. Houck and Gouge took down Martinez and Lyon, 8-2 and the team of Christoferson and Rupard beat W. Norman and Josh Norman, 8-1.

This was Ashe’s second 9-0 win over North Wilkes this season.

“There was good court coverage and a lot of going to the net. I am proud of their play as well as the attitude and sportsmanship,” said Dix.

Dix also complimented the play of North Wilkes, especially their team’s development as the season has went along.

The next day, Ashe defeated West Wilkes by a 5-2 score. The Huskies won four singles matches and one doubles match. The Blackhawks decided to not play the final two doubles matches due to the weather and because Ashe had already clinched the victory.

On Monday, Ashe suffered a 7-2 setback to Wilkes Central, who currently leads the 2A portion of the MVAC conference and has defeated the Huskies in both matchups this season.

The Huskies are currently 7-7 on the season and 5-5 in MVAC play.
