WEST JEFFERSON — A total of nine teams took part in the Ballin’ to Benefit Basketball Tournament at Westwood Elementary School on Saturday.

The tournament was held to help out Ashe County man Benny Coe, who has been battling a brain tumor and saw his medical expenses pile up.

“I started Ballin’ To Benefit non-profit organization because I wanted to be able to help people in the community who are ill and in need, due to no fault of their own,” said Tiffany Cozart. “Having two illnesses myself, I understand the importance of having support.”

Cozart felt like basketball was a great way to help others and bring people together for support.

“I have played basketball all my life and I absolutely love the sport as do other, so I thought by hosting sporting events and tournaments, it would benefit people in need and also give something fun for people in our community to do,” said Cozart.

The five-on-five, double elimination tournament came down to the championship game between Fear The One Above, a team from Charlotte, and The Old Heads, a team from Wilkesboro. Fear The One Above scored a 109-84 victory in the championship game. The Hustlerz from Wilkesboro finished in third place.

Looking ahead, Cozart says she plans on putting together another basketball tournament this summer and may also try to organize a flag football tournament as well.
