Ashe sweeps MVAC Championships

WILKESBORO — It was a clean sweep for the Ashe County track teams. The men and women both took home the 2016 Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Championship on Tuesday at Wilkes Central High School.

The women tallied 128.83 points, barely hanging on to beat Wilkes Central who had 126.33. North Wilkes (99) was third with Starmount (81) fourth and West Wilkes (75.33) in fifth. East Wilkes (72), Alleghany (62.5) and Elkin (39) rounded out the women’s standings.

For the men, it was a much less stressful victory for Ashe. The Huskies scored 192.5 points while second place West Wilkes nabbed 130 points. Starmount (80) was third followed by Elkin (66) in fourth and Wilkes Central (63) in fifth. East Wilkes finished with 59 points, North Wilkes had 54.5 points and Alleghany finished with 44 points.

The women had two event winners and five runner-up finishes.

Savannah Cary won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.84 seconds.Cary also placed third in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, five inches and fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 30 feet, four inches.

Teammate Bella Potter placed first in the high jump with a leap that cleared four feet, eight inches.

Kaitlyn Jordan had a strong run in the 400-meter dash, finishing second in 1:04. Madison Warner had a second place finish in the women’s two-mile event with a time of 13:21.

The women added two second place finishes in the 4×400 and 4×800 relays.

On the men’s side, Ashe had six individual victories. Victor Melo won the 400-meter dash in 53.15 seconds. He also placed third in the 100-meter dash in 12.03 seconds and fourth in the 200-meter dash in 24.27 seconds.

Nick Lanfranchi won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.82 seconds and took second in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.6 seconds.

Alex Richardson and Luis Ramos swept the top two spots in the discus throw. Richardson’s throw of 126 feet, four inches took first while Ramos’ throw measured in at 110 feet, five inches. Richardson grabbed third in shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 10 inches and Ramos placed fifth with a toss of 41 feet, five inches.

Andrew Tedder took the top spot in the mile run with a time of 4:45 and followed that up with a third place finish in the two-miler in 10:56.

The men saw all four of its relay teams finish in the top three. Ashe won the 4×200 and 4×400 relays, placed second in the 4×100 and third in the 4×800.

Women’s pole vault: Sullivan (second), Nichols (fourth), Huffman (sixth).

Women’s discus: Savannah Brooks (sixth), Katie Orr (10th), Katie Legato (21st).
