JEFFERSON — Over 90 players registered for the annual High Country Disc Golf Championships at Ashe Park, held last weekend.

Several High Country golfers more than held their own against some top competition.

Daniel Quin from Boone won the Open Championship, shooting 15-under, eight shots ahead of second place Michael Martinez. Delany Thomas of Jefferson finished in sixth with a four-over par performance

Brian Norris (Fleetwood) nearly won the advanced division, but fell short in a playoff loss to Matt Kovitch, who made the trip from Athens, Georgia to compete in the tourney.

In the intermediate division, Blowing Rock’s Charles Saffer (+5) was fifth. Kyle Denny (+8) and Shannon Terry (+8) both from Ashe finished in a tie for seventh and Boone’s Andrew Avery (+24) was 16th.

The course at Ashe Park continues to be one of the most popular courses in the state and the region.

“I’ve been playing this event since 2011 and it’s gotten better and better,” said Thomas. “Innova discs and the parks and rec staff do a tremendous job preparing the course every year for the event such as cleaning tee pads, fairways and making sure the course is as safe as it can be for everyone. The course is beginner friendly and yet challenging for even the average pro.”

Innova Disc Golf, one of the key contributors to the success of the course, recently built a new tee pad for the 14th hole to turn it into a very challenging par 3. The course also offers 20 different holes to play with alternative holes on the eighth and ninth green.

“Traditionally it’s an 18-hole course. This year they just installed a new 20-hole layout that is very challenging from both the short and long tees,” Thomas said. “The course is widely recognized as one of the best in the state and country. I’ve met a lot of people from all over the U.S. that make plans to play the course either during or on their way back from vacation.”

Thomas, who is sponsored by Prodigy Disc, a company based out of Georgia, said that while he was competing during the 2014 Amateur Disc Golf World Championships in St. Paul, Minnesota, he was shocked to meet so many people that knew about the course right here in Ashe County.
