BOONE — The preseason praise for the Mountaineer ground game continues to pile up as the trio of App State running backs were ranked as the 23rd best group in the country by Athlon Sports.

Leading rusher Marcus Cox along with young standouts Jalin Moore and Terrence Upshaw finished sixth in the country last year averaging just over 271 yards per game. The three backs combined for at least 200 yards in all but two games last year.

Cox heads into his senior year after a terrific junior season that saw him rack up 1,423 yards and is just 716 yards away from breaking Kevin Richardson’s all-time rushing record at App State.

Moore exploded onto the scene after a brief injury stint for Cox and ended up rushing for a freshman record 244 yards against Idaho and a total of 528 yards in the final four games of the year.

For Upshaw, he finished the season with 442 yards and three touchdowns while averaging almost six yards per carry.

The Mountaineers will open the season on Thursday, Sept. 1 against the Tennessee Volunteers.
