Winner Ryan Joyce and second place Christopher Zieman blew away the field, crossing the finish line just two-tenths of a second apart and nearly 10 minutes ahead of third place. Zieman, 44, won the race last year.

WEST JEFFERSON — The Blue Ridge Brutal earned its name on Saturday with temperatures that stayed in the mid to upper 80’s for most of the afternoon without any rain showers to cool the county.

A pair of riders pulled away from the pack in the 100-mile race and crossed the finish line together to cap off a great ride.

Ryan Joyce, 28, of Charlotte was crowned as the winner of the 100-miler with a finishing time of 4:49:26 while Christopher Zieman, 44, of Chapel Hill crossed the line one second later. Zieman was the winner of last year’s race.

Both riders finished ahead of third place by a little over nine minutes at 9:16.

In the 75-mile event, Greg Thompson, 37, of Kannapolis was the winner, finishing in 3:33:43, just over a minute ahead of second place Stanley Dover of Belmont.

The 57-mile race was equally as close as the 100-mile race with Roy McCauley, 46, of Sherrils Ford winning by one second over Mark Waites, 59, of Columbus, Ohio. McCauley’s finishing time was 2:41:02.

The top finish from an Ashe County rider went to Craig Pergerson in the 75-mile race. Pergerson, 71, finished in 14th place with a time of 3:57:42.
