WEST JEFFERSON — It was not quite the season opener that the Lady Husky volleyball team was hoping for. East Surry swept the varsity team in three sets.
In the first set, East Surry set the tone early with a 25-15 victory. In the next set, Ashe attempted to dig out of an early hole that saw East Surry take a commanding lead, but the Lady Cardinals held off the late charge by Ashe for a 25-16 win.
The third and final set was more of the same from East Surry, completing the match sweep with a 25-16 victory.
Senior Lynsey Aldridge led Ashe with two kills. Gianna Federico, Jada McClure and Mattie Joines each added one kill. McClure also had a nice game serving the ball, recording three aces on her nine serve attempts.
Sophomore Hailey Taylor made her serves count as well, scoring two aces on seven attempts.
The young Lady Husky group got more help from the underclassmen with sophomore Rayna Blevins tallying 17 digs to keep plays alive for Ashe. Taylor added six, Aldridge had six and senior Haley Phipps had two.
Ashe did struggle at times defensively, making 21 errors on received serves in three sets.
The Lady Huskies return to the court on Wednesday at home to face Avery.
Next week, Ashe will host Alexander Central on Tuesday and travel to Avery for a rematch with the Lady Vikings on Thursday.
