WEST JEFFERSON — The Ashe County cross country team held its first home meet of the year last week and saw a positive start to the 2016 season. The women placed first overall while the men finished in second place.

Three Ashe runners finished in the top five during the women’s meet. Freshman Mahaley Cronk won the meet by nearly two full minutes over second place Kaylee Shelton of East Wilkes. Cronk finished the race in 21:08.

Ashe’s Madison Warner placed third with a time of 23:33 while teammate Zoe Schell took fifth in 24:16. Olivia Randolph was the final Ashe runner in the top 10 with a ninth place run in 25:25.

The ladies finished with a team score of 33, an eight-point victory over East Wilkes who was in second with 41 points. Starmount finished with 68 and Watauga finished with 90. Alleghany also had a handful of runners in the event, but not enough to count in the team point standings.
