Volleyball finishes regular season

WEST JEFFERSON — The Ashe County varsity volleyball team wrapped up the final three matches of the regular season with one win against East Wilkes and a pair of losses against North Wilkes and West Wilkes.

Oct. 11 – Ashe 3, East Wilkes 0

Ashe played one of its best matches of the year, sweeping East Wilkes in three sets. The Lady Huskies took the first set, 25-13, and backed that performance up with a 25-20 win in the second set and a 25-23 win in the third set.

Senior Lynsey Aldridge helped lead the Ashe offense with 12 kills and 31 attacks. Mattie Joines had six kills and 11 attacks and Gianna Federico added five kills and 10 attacks.

Joines and Haley Phipps both had their serves on point during the three sets. Both had four serving aces and were a combined 29-30 on serves with just one error.

Sophomore Hailey Taylor led the way with 11 digs. Aldridge chipped in 10 digs and senior Jada McClure had six digs.

Phipps assisted on 16 Ashe points and Lyndsi Goodman added six helpers on points

For East Wilkes, Lauren Johnson was a bright spot on offense with 11 assists, seven kills and 11 attacks. Kallie Blackburn had 15 digs, Johnson had 13 and Kandice Darnell added 12.

Oct. 13 – North Wilkes 3, Ashe 0

Conference champion North Wilkes kept its unbeaten Mountain Valley Athletic Conference record intact with a sweep over the Lady Huskies. North Wilkes won the first set and second set by identical 25-15 scores and clinched the match with a 25-13 win in the third set.

Aldridge: Six kills, 16 attacks, three digs

Federico: Four kills, 10 attacks, three blocks

Joines: One kill, six attacks, three blocks, two digs

Goodman: One dig, seven assists

Phipps: One kill, five attacks, one ace, one dig, seven assists

Rayna Blevins: Two kills, 14 attacks, one block, 15 digs

McClure: 13 digs

Oct. 18 – West Wilkes 3, Ashe 0

In the final match of the regular season, West Wilkes earned a pair of close wins in the first two sets before a little easier win in the third set.

The Blackhawks won the first set, 26-24, and the second set, 25-22. In the third set, the visiting team won by a 25-17 score.

McKenzie Mastin led West with 15 kills and 27 attacks and Lauren Anderson had 11 kills and 18 attacks.

West Wilkes had a fantastic day serving with 11 aces. Carrie Pennell had four aces, Mastin had three, Anderson had two and Madison Hodges had two. Pennell and Emily Bumgarner each chipped in 17 assists.

Aldridge had a team-high 13 kills and 32 attacks. Blevins had seven kills and 14 attacks, Federico had five kills and Joines added three kills with 15 attacks. Joines added five blocks and Phipps had four.

As a team, the Lady Huskies had 28 assists. Phipps recorded 16 of those and Goodman had the other 12.

The Lady Huskies ended the regular season with a 6-13 overall record and a 3-11 record in the MVAC.

2. Alleghany: 14-7, 11-3

3. Starmount: 12-11, 10-4

4. West Wilkes: 12-8, 8-6

5. Elkin: 6-14, 6-8

6. Ashe County: 6-13, 3-11

7. Wilkes Central: 5-16, 2-12

8. East Wilkes: 3-15, 2-12
