WEST JEFFERSON — Hibriten was too strong for Ashe to handle in the first match of the season, dealing the Lady Huskies a 7-2 defeat on Monday.
The Lady Huskies are having to replace five of its six seeded players from last season and it will be somewhat of a rebuilding year.
Hibriten has had a good program over the last few years and were a good test for the Lady Huskies early in the year. According to head coach Larry Dix, this is the first time Ashe has played Hibriten since he has been coaching.
“We are young and inexperienced so this was a good opportunity for us,” said Coach Dix.
The Panthers used to be in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference before making the jump to 3A and joining Watauga’s conference with 3A and 4A teams.
Coach Dix said that while most members of the team are learning the sport, there are several good athletes and the future is bright.
Keely Caddell is the lone returning seeded player from last year’s team. She played as Ashe’s top seed in the opener.
Ashe (0-1) will open conference play at home against East Wilkes on Tuesday.
